When Scottish author J.M. Barrie penned Peter Pan in 1904, young audiences were enchanted by the elaborate fantasy world filled with free-spirited youth and time-hating pirates. They still are. But as most mortals do grow up, these interpretations melt with age, and rational old-timers instead see Peter Pan as a naïve child who never matured and adapted to reality. No wonder Michael Jackson chose Barrie's psychologically numb protagonist to inspire his infamous Neverland Ranch, where tykes came to live out their youthful fantasies-or those of Jackson.
